FLEX program
What is a FLEX program?
Several types of World Language (Language B) programs exist in IB PYP Elementary Schools
throughout the world.
Immersion
programs combine foreign language instruction with content learning from the
regular curriculum.
* 20%-100% of total instructional time
every day of the week across every content area is taught in the target
language.
FLES
programs are designed to provide sequential language instruction aiming for
some degree of language proficiency.
* Classes meet 2-5 times per week for 20-40 minutes per session for a
total of 60-150 min/week
FLEX
programs are designed to provide limited exposure to one or more foreign
languages for elementary students.
*Classes meet once or twice a week for a total of less than 60
min/week
Needham Elementary FLEX program for pre-5th grade students.
1st - 5th grade Spanish classes meet once a week for 40 minutes. Kindergarten Spanish classes meet once a week for 30 minutes and preschool for 20 minutes once a week. The goal of our program is to introduce students to
another language, support the IB PYP, and to motivate them to pursue further language and culture study. Parents should expect their children to recognize basic vocabulary but not reach a measurable level of proficiency by 5th grade. The FLEX program creates enthusiasm for language study and supports the 21st century skills vital to success as a global learner.
